Degressive lenses
Extended vision for screens positioned at eye level. Comfortable posture and improved ergonomics when working at a computer.
Tired of having to lift your chin when working on a screen or reading in bed? Degressive lenses provide clear, comfortable vision for people with presbyopia who spend long hours working in front of one or multiple screens.
Comfortable vision at home and at the office
At Bar à Lunettes, we offer high-quality degressive lenses designed to meet the visual needs of active individuals seeking comfort at near and intermediate distances. Suitable for people with presbyopia and available in several versions, they are ideal for computer work, DIY projects, or any activity requiring precise vision up close or at arm’s length.
Ideal for both professional settings and home use, degressive lenses provide a smooth transition between near and intermediate vision, without a correction zone for distance vision. They are the perfect solution for those who spend several hours in front of a screen, engage in face-to-face meetings, read large documents, cook while following a cookbook or an iPad on a stand, or perform elevated tasks.
What is a degressive lens?
Also known as intermediate lenses, degressive lenses are designed to provide a wide, clear field of vision between 30 cm and 2 meters. They offer excellent depth of field, allowing precise and comfortable vision across the entire range between close-up reading and arm’s-length viewing.
Unlike progressive lenses, they do not correct distance vision, which allows for a wider, higher intermediate viewing area without peripheral blur. The intermediate zone is optimized for viewing nearby objects, providing enhanced visual comfort at these distances. The main difference between progressive and degressive lenses lies in the specific design of the intermediate vision zone, which is positioned higher and better suited to the needs of desktop computer users.
How do degressive lenses work?
Degressive lenses are specifically designed to meet the visual needs of active individuals for near and intermediate vision, such as reading, working at a computer screen, or engaging in face-to-face interactions in a room or during meetings.
They offer a smooth transition between several vision zones:
- The lower portion of the lens is dedicated to near vision, optimized for reading or viewing a cellphone screen.
- The intermediate vision zone, located above, is strategically positioned higher within the lens. This allows for more natural posture when viewing higher screens, reducing strain on the shoulders and neck and eliminating the need to lift the chin.
P.S. For certain models, a small upper zone allows you to view an entire room effortlessly.
Degressive glasses: who are they for and what are they used for?
Degressive glasses are ideal if you:
- Work in front of a screen for several hours a day
- Need to read sheet music on a music stand
- Often work in a small space such as a kitchen, office, or workshop
- Are looking for greater depth of field than reading glasses provide
Note: Degressive lenses are often appreciated by people who enjoy reading while lying down, when progressive lenses do not offer a sufficiently wide viewing zone.
Why choose glasses with degressive lenses at Bar à Lunettes?
Key advantages:
- Advanced Japanese Hoya technology: High-precision digital design for optimal comfort at near and intermediate distances. Ideal for professionals and avid readers.
- Reflection-free optics: A seamless lens surface with no visible demarcation, enhanced with an anti-reflective treatment for greater clarity.
- Vision tailored to your daily life: Each lens is adjusted to your posture, screen distance, and visual habits, whether you work at a computer or read documents.
Scratch resistance: Less eye strain caused by scratches, thanks to one of the most durable coatings available. - Versatility in a single pair: Degressive lenses are a smart replacement for reading glasses, offering clear vision up close and at intermediate distances without needing to wear them on the tip of your nose.
Degressive lenses: pricing and available options
At Bar à Lunettes, we believe visual comfort and style should go hand in hand, no matter your budget. That is why we offer a range of degressive lenses at different price points, tailored to your everyday needs and your style preferences. The price of degressive lenses varies based on several factors:
- Manufacturing technology
You can choose from standard, advanced, or highly customized models. The more advanced the technology, the sharper the optics and the smoother the transition between zones. - Level of customization
Some clients require a custom fit based on atypical eye measurements or an unusual working position (computer use, reading, etc.). This approach ensures superior comfort, but requires more complex manufacturing.
Our optometrists and opticians guide you at every step to help you find the best balance of quality, comfort, and price.

FAQs
-
What is a degressive lens?
A degressive lens, also called a proximity lens, is designed to provide clear vision from near to intermediate distances. Unlike progressive lenses, which cover all distances (distance, intermediate, and near), degressive lenses are optimized for indoor activities such as screen work, reading, or meetings. They are an excellent choice for both professional and home use.
-
Who are degressive glasses for?
Degressive glasses are ideal for:
- People with presbyopia who need visual support for office work.
- Those who spend long hours in front of a screen.
- Professionals who alternate between computer use, paper documents, and close-range interactions with colleagues.
They provide comfortable vision at near and intermediate distances while reducing visual fatigue.
-
Can I wear my degressive lenses all day?
Degressive lenses are primarily designed for indoor use. Wearing them consistently in indoor environments helps reduce eye strain and discomfort, while also minimizing shoulder and neck tension, especially when working with higher screens. Although they provide excellent clarity at intermediate distances, they do not replace progressive or single-vision lenses for distance vision, such as driving. For a more versatile solution, a second pair may be recommended for outdoor use.

What is the price of degressive lenses?
The price of degressive lenses varies based on several factors:
- The technology used (standard, advanced, or custom).
- The coatings applied: anti-reflective, blue light filter, photochromic, etc.
- The level of customization: adaptation to your posture, pupillary distance, type of frame, etc.
-
Are degressive lenses compatible with all frames?
Yes, most degressive lenses are compatible with a wide range of frames. However, to ensure optimal fitting and a clear field of vision, our opticians will guide you toward the frames best suited to your lifestyle and everyday use.
-
Do degressive lenses include blue light protection?
Our degressive lenses can be treated with a blue light filter, which is ideal for people who are easily bothered by glare. However, it is generally not necessary for most people who do not have difficulty falling asleep.
Hoya, the most durable lenses in the world
Hoya eyeglass lenses (Japan) are distinguished by exceptional hardness: during resistance tests carried out at the University of Montreal, they surpassed all other lens companies, Essilor, Nikon, Zeiss, etc... offering durable protection against everyday scratches.
Thanks to their high-performance anti-reflective coating, Hoya lenses resist heat and maintain a clear and intact surface, while many other competing anti-reflective coatings become damaged, degraded or marked under the effect of high temperatures.
